from the Editor
October 1, 2006
Dear Friends,
Many of us are
grieving the tragic, sudden deaths of 24 individuals
who went down in a helicopter crash in Nepal on September
23rd. Among the victims were colleagues working in conservation,
including 7 WWF employees. In the words of WWF-US's
President, Carter Roberts, "this is a time of profound
sadness...they are conservation heroes that will be
sorely missed by all of us." This terrible tragedy
is seen as a substantial setback to conservation efforts
in Nepal. On Wednesday September 27th the government
of Nepa declared a public holiday and a national day
of mourning. Our hearts go out to the many people and
communities who are affected by this sad news.
Until December,
Heidi

Wetlands
Mask China's Rising Role in Climate Change
28 September
2006, SciDev.Net by Catherine Brahic - Atmospheric levels
of a potent greenhouse gas whose concentration levelled
off in 1999 could rise in the near future, warns a study
published in Nature today. Its authors say China's booming
economy could be responsible for an increase in methane
emissions, and that this trend has been masked by a
simultaneous decline in natural emissions from wetlands.

Researchers
Track Birds with GPS to Understand Spread of Avian Flu [Mongolial]
25 September 2006,
European Commission – We are familiar with the images
of large poultry farms being cordoned off where large numbers
of domesticated chickens are culled to stem the spread of
the devastating avian flu. However, little is known of the
extent to which wild migratory birds are involved in spreading
the virus over great distances. The FAO-led team of scientists
is hoping to change that by fixing tiny GPS units to swans
in Mongolia to monitor their winter migration patterns. Click

Time to Move
the Mississippi, Experts Say [USA]
19 September 2006,
New York Times, By Cornelia Dean - Scientists have long said
the only way to restore Louisiana’s vanishing wetlands
is to undo the elaborate levee system that controls the Mississippi
River, not with the small projects that have been tried here
and there, but with a massive diversion that would send the
muddy river flooding wholesale into the state’s sediment-starved
marshes. Click

Saving the
Wetlands in South Asia [India]
18 September 2006,
LiveScience.com, by Bruce G. Marcot - This eerie scene in
a dawn mist is part of a vast, seasonally-flooded wetland
in northern India. Called terai such wetlands once ran along
the entire length of the southern base of the Himalayan Mountains.
But in recent decades, much of these wetlands have been drained
and converted to sugar cane or rice paddies or villages, endangering
an entire ecosystem as well as sources of clean water for
local inhabitants. Click

Eco-paradises
in Crossfire of Water Scarcity Fight [Botswana]
17 September 2006, Reuters, By Laura MacInnis, Geneva - Delicate
wetlands, coasts and wildlife sanctuaries could be ravaged
as part of a struggle to stretch the world's water supplies,
with the worst damage foreseen in poor countries. Achim Steiner,
executive director of the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP),
said precious ecosystems like the Okavango Delta in Botswana
-- the planet's largest inland delta, which hosts a diversity
of fish, game and birds -- may be targeted as a fresh water
source if scarcity becomes acute. Click

13 September 2006,
Peter Ottesen - More than 13,000 wild migratory birds have
been tested since April for avian influenza in Alaska and,
according to scientists, no H5N1 virus has been detected in
any of the samples. The program has a goal to test 75,000

Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). Since 1989, NAWCA has successfully

Figuring
Out Birds' Migrations, Motivations
11 September 2006,
Washington Post, by Shankar Vedantam - Every spring, thousands
of birds, some weighing a pound or less, set off on a journey

to breeding grounds in Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada
and to U.S. Why do they do this? Seasonal migrations of birds

Precious Wetlands
Rapidly Disappearing [USA]
21 August 2006, The
Japan Times on Line, by Hiroaki Sato, Sunset Beach, North
Carolina - Back to the barrier island where my wife and I
spend two weeks of every summer, I think of the U.S. Supreme
Court decision in June that dealt with the disposition of
wetlands. The justices' opinions -- in what was called the
most significant environmental case under new Chief Justice
John Roberts -- were so splintered that one commentator described
the decision as a 4-1-4, rather than a 5-4, split. Click

Bringing Wetlands
to the Farm [South Carolina, USA]
21 August, 2006, By
Luis Pons, USDA Agricultural Research Service - Most farmers
and ranchers aren't near any wetlands, which are nature's
tool for filtering impurities out of waterways—and would
help keep excess crop nutrients and livestock waste out of
rivers and streams. That's why scientists at the Coastal Plains
Soil, Water and Plant Research Center of the Agricultural
Research Service in Florence, S.C., are exploring the use
of constructed wetlands as a way to bring these natural filters
to farmers. Click

Burning Northern Wetlands Release Increased Quantities
of Sequestered Mercury
21 August 2006, Innovations Report - Climate change appears
to be contributing to the waking of a toxic sleeping giant
in the most northern wetlands of North America. Mercury, released
into the atmosphere most prodigiously with the launching of
the industrial age, falls back onto Earth and accumulates,
particularly in North American wetlands. Researchers at Michigan
State University, the U.S. Geological Survey, the National
Center for Atmospheric Research, and the Canadian Forest Service
find that wildfires, which are becoming more frequent and
intense, are unleashing this sequestered mercury at levels
up to 15 times greater than previously calculated. Their report
was published 19 August in Geophysical Research Letters. Click
